THE JODHPUR PROJECT: protect, educate, prevent

In 2004, the Marwar Trust launched a five-year project to eliminate rabies in Jodhpur in Northwest India. The project aims to saves the lives of children and dogs by showing that the sterilization plus vaccination approach to rabies control leads to the elimination of rabies.

Alongside the program, the Trust will undertake a schools-based rabies education and prevention program targeting the most at-risk, 5-15 year old children. This pilot project aims to establish a model of excellence that can be applied throughout India and Asia. The following list explains the steps the Trust will take to make the Jodhpur Project a success:

The Practical Steps:

  1. Prior to the launch, gather detailed information on the transmission of rabies within Jodhpur and on the street dog population.
  2. Enlist, inform and involve the people of Jodhpur by organising a public education campaign.
  3. Begin the dog animal birth control and anti-rabies vaccination program.
  4. Launch a rabies prevention program across Jodhpur's 166 public and private school focusing particularly on the 5-15 age class.
