The Marwar Trust and Petplan Charitable Trust Team Up To Provide Rabies Awareness Education to Indian Children
Launch of programme will provide practical information on canine rabies in schools, helping to overcome current lack of awareness amongst school children.
10th January 2005 - The Marwar Trust has announced that the PetPlan Charitable Trust has provided a welfare grant which will support a rabies awareness education campaign in Jodhpur, North West India. The programme is designed to eliminate rabies in Jodhpur, by providing a centre of excellence in the control of rabies in India.
"PetPlan's support for this programme will go a long way in helping to address the lack of rabies awareness amongst school children in Jodhpur," says Federico Spinola, Chairman of the Marwar Trust UK. "Rabies is a disease of the young, mostly affecting the 5-15 age class. PetPlan's grant will help save lives though a better understanding of canine rabies. We are delighted to have them support our programme."
Funding from the PetPlan Charitable Trust will finance the education campaign across Jodhpur's 166 public and private schools for a year. The programme activities include talks/lectures and essay writing competitions. Materials are distributed to the school children to carry home, to share with their family and community. The education programme forms part of a larger initiative to eliminate rabies in Jodhpur by undertaking an animal birth control and rabies vaccination programme. Working with experts from the WHO, the programme hopes to validate a new approach to the elimination of rabies in India.
David Simpson, Chairman of the Petplan Charitable Trust said, "The grant forms part of the Petplan Charitable Trust's annual financial awards. Each year, through an optional donation of £1 that is given when a client takes out or renews their pet insurance policy, the Petplan Charitable Trust is able to make donations to worthy causes. Through the Charitable Trust, Petplan is able to give back a valuable contribution where it matters most. We are proud of our work in helping to promote better animal health."
